There are a great number of harmful drugs that harm people. Cocaine is one of the drugs which have targeted the lives of a lot of human beings. In order to understand the effects of cocaine on human body, it is important that one understands the nature of this drug first. Cocaine is an extract of a tropical cocoa plant. It is known as a double acting drug: firstly, it stimulates the central nervous system of the human body, and secondly, it gives an anaesthetic state to the human mind and body, thus, resulting in numbness in all parts of the body.

It is available in the form of a white powder. The most common way of using cocaine is inhaling through straws from a spoon. Other than this method, it is also injected or smoked. It produces short-term as well as long-term side effects.

Consuming cocaine hurdles the absorption process of dopamine, which is a brain chemical that is affiliated with the feelings of pleasure and movement. It results in developing and creating a euphoric effect. Not very long after cocaine has entered the body, the victim undergoes constricted blood vessels, dilated pupils, increased body temperature, increased heartbeat rate and increased blood pressure.

The conditions given above are termed as the short-term effects on the people who consume cocaine. While the person is feeling euphoria, he is least likely to feel tired. He shall be mentally alert and hyper stimulated during this phase. But, in some cases, people go through anxiety, irritability and restlessness. People may also develop paranoid psychosis, hallucinate and may drift away from the real world. This phase usually lasts for 30 minutes.

There is absolutely no doubt in the fact that continuous use of cocaine results in palpitation, heart attack, pain in the chest, respiratory problems, strokes, seizures, headaches, nausea, and abdominal pain. Cocaine can actually minimize the appetite to such an extent that the person is vulnerable to malnutrition. Sometimes cocaine reacts instantly to the way in which it is consumed.

If it is inhaled through nose, there are chances that the inhaler bleeds from nose, or he may become immune to smell. Hoarseness of throat is another factor accompanied with swallowing problems and a runny nose. When it is injected in the body, he may get an allergic reaction; he becomes prone to HIV, hepatitis and other diseases. Bowel gangrene is the worst type of disease that one might get by orally taking cocaine.

It is important for people to be aware of the fact that overdose of this harmful drug can be fatal. A distorted heartbeat, heart failure, high blood pressure, brain haemorrhage, repeated convulsion, and respiration failures can all result in death of the consumer.

Even the gradual use of cocaine in small quantities can make a person an addict. It is common for those people who smoke cocaine to become its addicts, and that much quicker as compared to those who inhale it via nose. Nowadays, rehabilitation centres are working everywhere to help the addicts in getting rid of this curse. But, mere therapies cannot achieve the desired goals; the society should positively guide the addict who needs his own will power to make the best of the therapy.
