One problem that nomads often face is the unmistakable lack of rest while traveling. Some of the contributing factors that keeps you up at night are jam-packed hostel dorm room, nonstop invitations to party every night or maybe the urge to visit as much places as you can in only an insufficient period of time. Of course you can always get the time for these socializing activities but always be mindful to get adequate rest. Do not forget that one of the reasons why you travel is to relax and delight yourself being in a new surrounding and not to feel drawn all the time. Worse is going back home with a sleeping disorder and more.

Some factors that heightens stress while traveling includes missing a ride, not knowing where to go to a new destination, waiting for delayed flights, losing your backpack, etc. But don’t let having problems sleeping be a part of it! This is something you can control! Try these tips that might help you catch some forty winks.

1. Clear your nose. Flying can cause some level of sinus or ear irritation if you often go through nasal congestion most likely because of colds and allergies which can also make you stay up all night . Prevent nose, ear or sinus problems by opening up these passageways by using a lot of nasal saline acting as a mild decongestant which you can prepare yourself or by heading out to the pharmacy to buy nasal sprays or decongestant pills.

2. Do not stuff yourself before hitting the sack. Even though this may be seen as a typical habit whether you’re on a vacation or just staying in at home, this could surely destroy your plan to have a peaceful sleep. Not only does it make you gain more weight but when you’re full as you lay on your back, some of the stomach acids or juices goes into your throat and cause inflammation and soreness. This will disrupt your rest and reduce the chances of nipping in undisturbed. It is recommended to eat your grub 3-4 hours prior to bedtime.

3. Don’t even think about drinking yourself to sleep. Many people will at once think that binge drinking would aid them to have an improved sleep as it knocks them out but consequently, you don’t get to catch some Z’s early. Little do you know that it slackens throat muscles and when you happen to rest on your back, the collapse of your tongue would force it backwards covering your airway passageways. This would deprive your brain of oxygen. Sometimes, when your body becomes too limp to move a muscle, the air that comes in would be blocked and cause you to stop breathing if you happen to fall flat on your face. Isn’t that terrible enough? This is not to keep you from having fun on an casual pub crawling; just be sure to know your limits and have time for everything.

4. Start the habit of sleeping early. It may be tough, yes. For self-confessed insomniacs, it’s absolutely hard to work that out. But if you’re just tempted to stay up late and make the most out of your time while on a vacation, fight that urge and make up a schedule of things to do then manage your time.But you must remember that having your meals on time and going to bed before the break of dawn allow you to have a normal sleeping time that your body demands. Try not to shift and mix up your body clock by sleeping late and waking up much later the next day. It will be difficult to return to your normal sleeping habits especially when you shift through changing time zones.
