If you are ready to give up the cigarettes for good but do not want to use expensive replacement products, then it may seem that cold turkey is the only method left. It is extremely hard to quit by any means, but especially cold turkey. Consider the following tips for quitting smoking naturally to help you get prepared mentally for the journey ahead.

Why is the first W to consider. Why are you doing this? There has to be a compelling reason beyond someone else nagging you. It has to be personal.

The fear of cancer can be intense but it is usually not powerful enough to bring long term motivation. Wanting to prevent disease so you live long enough to meet your grandchildren would be more of a personal reason that could get you through difficult or tempting moments.

The second W is “when.” There is never going to be a perfect time to quit, but you don’t want to try this during a time of severe stress or emotional pain. If there is something happening out of the ordinary that may cause a lot of upheaval in your life you may want to wait for things to calm down some so you aren’t setting yourself up for too much at one time.

Finally, ask yourself “What if?” You should have some actions and habits in mind that can take the place of smoking in particular situations you would normally light up. For example, what if you go to lunch at work and everyone else is smoking? What if you are home alone bored and want to smoke?

Think of all the situations you could be in that would lead to intense cravings and have alternative actions that will release some of the pressure.

You may decide to go for a walk after dinner instead of lighting up as usual or take your kids to the park as a distraction on weekends. Other ideas are to exercise, talk on the phone, or take up a new hobby that keeps your hands busy.
