Hearing loss can be caused by a lot of different things, and the most successful chances a person has of reversing it is by diagnosing it early on. Studies have shown that immersing yourself in noise, like in an airport, concerts and so forth is one way of getting hearing loss. An audiologist will use an audiometer to check a person’s hearing sensitivity against different sound levels and frequencies. The patient will sit in a soundproof booth, wearing headphones that are hooked up to an audiometer. The specialist operates the audiometer so that it supplies the headphones the patient is wearing with specific sounds.
The person inside the booth should respond at once and at first instance of hearing the sound. A plot of sound frequency against sound decibel levels is graphed by the technician. One look at the graph plotted out will expose what frequencies and volume sound cannot be heard by the subject.
To determine if the person is suffering from conductive hearing loss or sensorineural hearing loss, the Weber and Rinne tests are performed. The type of hearing loss can be determined by the two tests by the use of a tuning fork. The Weber test can be a quick test used to check for presence of hearing loss, but only the Rinne test can determine which type is present and at which ear.
Starting with the Weber test, a tuning fork is placed in the middle of the forehead at a point that has the same distance from both ears. The patient will either hear unequal sound in the ears, which means hearing loss in one of the ears or equal sound meaning no hearing loss or equal hearing loss. The only definite thing that can be concluded from this test is when the sound heard is not the same in both ears.
A person can find out if he or she has conductive hearing loss or sensorineural hearing loss, by going under the Rinne test. Whether the right ear has conductive or the left ear has sensorineural, the two test can be used to figure it out. The Weber, Rinne tests should also be used in connection with an audiometry to get the best results.
