As you relax over a cup of coffee after lunch, you might sometimes ask yourself if it’s doing you harm. If you’re the worrying type, you might ask yourself that same question every day.

Hundreds of millions of people around the world drink coffee. Not only does the taste grow on coffee drinkers over time, but the obvious benefits of caffeine provide an ample boost to our energy levels that nothing else seems to do.

A cup of coffee can also help us while we work. In studies, caffeine was shown to make people more alert, better able to concentrate and more efficient.

CoffeeWhile the mental benefits of coffee are clear, the jury’s still out there when it comes to the physical benefits of the drink. Some people believe that it’s harmless, while others insist that it can’t be good for you.

Research has shown that coffee might raise blood pressure levels, and even heart rates, over time. Many people are alarmed by this idea.

On the other hand, these same studies point to the fact that mass consumption of coffee in heavy doses over long periods of time would be the only way to make this happen. If you’re having just a cup a day or something to that effect, you have little reason to worry.

Then, of course, we have the beneficial effects of the antioxidants in coffee. Studies have shown that they offer a line of defense against the development of diseases such as cancer. This is not hard to believe when we consider that coffee is natural. The same qualities are also to be found in red wine, another natural product.

The safest course of action is to drink coffee in moderation. It’s a strong stimulant and we should be careful not to overdo it, especially once the aging process has taken hold. Savor the odd cup of coffee as a special treat.
