Anyone who has been diagnosed already knows that hypothyroidism and weight loss is a nearly impossible combination. The term hypothyroidism refers to a medical condition where the thyroid gland is not producing a sufficient amount of thyroid hormones. The reason that hypothyroidism and weight loss is such a frustrating combination is because one of the major functions of the thyroid hormone is maintaining a good metabolism the hypothyroidism causes a person’s metabolism as well as lowering their energy, so instead of using food for energy it stores it in the fatty cells. Once this starts to happen, the situation develops a snowball effect, the heavier a person gets, the harder it is to move, and the less they move the more weight they gain.
The good news is that just because a person’s thyroid gland isn’t functioning properly doesn’t mean that hypothyroidism and weight loss is impossible. There are some things a person can do that might be able to make loosing weight easier.
The first thing a person with hypothyroidism should try when they want to lose weight is increase their iron intake. Iron is a trace mineral the body needs to function properly but doesn’t produce on its own. When a person starts taking an iodine supplement they can actually boost the productivity of their thyroid and jump start their metabolism. Some caution needs to be used when taking an iodine supplement. Too much iodine can be just as bad as not enough iodine.
If iodine and hormone treatments have been tried and the person is still finding that hypothyroidism and weight loss are an impossible combination, they need to discuss the pros and cons of having their thyroid removed. While the removal of the thyroid does make it easier for the person to lose weight, there is some risk to the procedure so thyroid removal surgery should be a last resort.
