Modern medicine has certainly made great strides in recent years, and if you should face any kind of serious illness then the tools of medicine can help you a lot. However, instead of waiting to be saved by medical miracles and complex drugs and surgery, you can actually protect yourself from serious illnesses simply by taking some natural steps to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some things you can do:

1. Exercise Regularly. In the past humans had to work at physically demanding tasks and this kept them in shape. Today, we are engaged in mental rather than physical labor, and this lack of physical activity is often the cause of obesity, diabetes and a host of other illnesses. Instead of sitting back on your easy chair, you should make it a point to exercise daily. If you are not the athletic type or you don’t want to invest in an exercise machine, the easiest way to get exercise is to take a walk each day. Thirty to forty minutes daily will definitely keep you in shape.

Happiness 2. Eat Only When You Are Hungry. We are creatures of habit and follow daily routines. However, when it comes to eating it is better to listen to the signals from your body than to keep your eye on the clock. If you are not hungry, then don’t eat, even if it is the normal time for your meal. When you are in good health, you will have a good appetite. If you do not have an appetite, wait till it comes. Continuous eating at times when you are not hungry is an invitation to various digestive disorders.

3. Practice fasting from time to time. This may sound difficult and even crazy to some people. But before you skip this point, consider a few things. Everybody needs a rest from time to time. You probably enjoy having days off each week and a vacation once in a while. Well the same is true for your digestive system. It cannot work day after day without a rest. Periodic fasting helps to give that rest to your digestive system and also helps you to get rid of poisonous waste that accumulates in your body. Fasting is a great tool for maintaining overall good health.

4. Are You Sleepy? If So, Go to Sleep! This is obvious no doubt. But many people take stimulants to stay awake and finish some kind of work. And many others just stay awake out of habit or because they can’t get their eyes off the TV screen or computer. Just like when you are eating, when it comes to sleep it is important to understand what your body is telling you. As soon as you feel drowsy in the evening, then you should get ready for bed. If you think that you are gaining an hour of work by staying up later, then you may be fooling yourself because you may lose this hour the next day with some mistake made while you are not alert or you may lose an entire day due to a preventable illness.

5. Get Up as Early As Possible. You may have heard the expression “Early to bed, early to rise makes the man healthy, wealthy and wise.” I don’t know if early rising will make your rich or wise, but it is definitely one of the traits of people who live long. Our body is best suited to being active during the day and sleeping during the hours of darkness. If you reverse this pattern and sleep during the day and remain active deep into the night, then you will disturb your body’s natural equilibrium and this usually leads to illness.

6. Meditate to Relieve Stress. Many of the health problems of today have their root in mental causes, particularly stress. High blood pressure in particular is often associated with stress. Meditation and gentle yoga exercises are ideal for relieving the stress and finding peace in the midst of the hustle and bustle of life. Look around for a course near you and try it out and you will be taking one more step to better health.

Practice any or all of these above-mentioned methods and you will be pleasantly surprised with the results. Hopefully you will never have to try out the wonder drugs or undergo the latest types of surgery!
