We live in noisy world which is why it’s inevitable that you get exposed to loud noises everyday from your neighbor’s incessant dog barks, your wife watching her favorite sitcom, you at your power tools, your daughter with his blasting mp3 player music, and your son at a rock concert. These are the reasons why the exercises that will be described in the next section are necessary if you want to improve hearing and put ear problems that lead to hearing loss at bay.
Noise Filtering Exercise
Is a simple exercise that allows you to improve your ear’s ability to pick out sounds which you only want to hear. Before you start, you’ll need two or more sources of music and a sibling or a friend or your Mom or just someone who can talk.
Get your first source of sound and play a not so loud music then carry a conversation with your partner without raising your voice nor leaning forward to understand each other. After a while add the second source of music while carrying the conversation in the same voice and manner as with a single source of sound. If you want, you can add in a third sound source and so on.
Sound Source Location Exercise
Improve hearing with this exercise where you will be sharpening your hearing and your sense of direction. For this you’ll need something that creates sound or noise such as a horn and you’ll also need a partner then choose a place where you will not look weird, funny, or silly.
Give the horn to your partner and with your eyes closed have him go to a specific location. As he makes 2 to 3 second bursts of sound you should try to locate where he is and point out his exact location.
Later make him move around at varying distances from you. It would be good if you could pinpoint his location accurately to his approximate distance from you. You could take turns at this, its fun and could be a good exercise with all the walking that you both will be doing.
Sound Clues
In this exercise you will learn to recognize different sounds in your environment to improve hearing. Again, this is very simple and all you need to have is where you are.
You can start by sitting where you are and closing your eyes. Listen to the sounds around you. What do you hear? What are those things? A clock? Your watch? A radio playing somewhere? Perhaps your neighbor’s dog barking?
As you learn to recognize sounds, you should also learn to pinpoint exactly where those sounds are coming from. For example, you could say, “A radio is playing Mozart in John’s room”.
Here is a fact that few people are aware of, we hear with our brain. In a nutshell the sound waves enter the ears and proceed to the eardrum, the eardrum in turn will send the message to the brain, and finally the brain processes and interprets what you heard.
This is the reason why we are able to isolate a single sound from among numerous sounds. This is what happens when you and a friend stand in a sea of people and can still carry an intelligent conversation despite the noise.
This is why you should also exercise your brain regularly so that your five senses stay sharp. Some simple yet effective brain exercises that you can do to [5]improve hearing are:
