When people think about treating skin scars incurred by injuries and infection, they tend to associate it with those high-priced nip and tuck procedures that we see in modern media. Though it is true that these methods are indeed some of the more effective methods in helping get rid of scars, it is not a feasible option for many that work two or more jobs to pay the bills. Creams based on vitamin E - there are a host of products out there that claim to help in getting rid of scars or reduce the appearance of scars through the help of vitamin E. Unfortunately, though, scientific facts point to an unfavorable proof that these products are not effective in what it claims to do. Furthermore, they may even cause bad effects in that they could cause allergic reactions about 30% of the time. One benefit that vitamin E provides is that it is a good moisturizer but it does nothing to help get rid of scarring.

Onion extracts-based products - a well-known example of such product is Mederma which in a study has been shown to be not more beneficial than the placebo used (petroleum jelly). Experts are even advising doctors to tell their patients that onion extracts based products will neither cause harm nor benefits to their scarring issues.

Alternative scar removal options like those based on cocoa, aloe vera, cucumber and lime juice have not been demonstrated to actually work hence are also dubious in terms of whether they really would do some good.

Products that offer effective scar treatment without breaking the bank are products that has silicone in them like silicone sheets and creams (more effective when used in conjunction with each other). This products have been clinically shown to be good in improving or removing scar tissues, even with keloids or hypertrophic scar tissues. This is backed up by scientific clinical trials and is considered as the standard in scar treatment today.

Silicone sheeting is ideal since it is not invasive and is quite painless and most especially, relatively cheaper compared to other options that work. This approach is especially more effective if used early in the wound healing process and is used extensively in treating burn injuries.

Scar removal methods that work does not have to involve painful and inconvenient methods such as surgical procedures as there are effective, yet cheaper ways to achieve the same results. Silicone sheeting application is one such ways and is shown to be effective through clinical trials.
