Just a bleeding nuisance or a major hassle? Do you suffer from nose bleeds? If you do then you’ll know how hard it can be to get the bleeding to stop. This article is full of tips to help you.

Generally a good place to start if you have an unexpected nosebleed is usually to ever so gently blow ones nose. It’ll assist clear away the nostrils of blood clots which will stop your blood vessel from sealing. Don’t blow hard or you might simply provoke it to bleed all the more.

Here’s what to do next. No matter what you’ve been told before, it is never a good idea to lie down if you have a nose bleed or an episode of epistaxis. Stay seated or stand up if you feel more comfortable. If you try to lean backwards or lie down then you will only end up swallowing blood – causing you to choke or to vomit.

NosebleedStep three – and this is the important bit. Press on the soft fleshy bit of your nose with your finger or thumb. You need to do this for a full twenty minutes and you need to time it using a clock or a wristwatch. Do not stop too soon. If you let go before 20 mins has gone bye then the bleeding will start all over again. If you are still gushing blood after twenty minutes then you should think about going to hospital.

I’ve read that drinking spicy liquids can slow down bleeding or blood loss. I have to say that I’m not sure this is true. But – if you can tolerate it then try mixing eight small spoonfuls of the hottest cayenne or chilli extract you can find with a cupful of warm water. Drink this as quickly as you can and you should find the nose stops bleeding.

Some other old fashioned treatments include wrapping twine or string around your little finger nail on the hand opposite to the side where the nostril is bleeding. Tie it as tight as you can and your granny says that the nose bleed will stop !

Finally, if you like crystals or gemstones then you can use amber to stop your nosebleed. Amber is reported to have magical powers to stop bleeding. Hold it against your nose if you have any at home.

Those of us who get regular nose bleeds should see our doctor for a blood pressure check and should give some thought to taking increased doses of vitamin C on a regular basis. Vitamin K also helps and this is found in leafy green vegetables.
