When you lose your hair, most often it happens because of overabundance of testosterone in your organism - this beneficial male hormone has an ugly tendency to become dihydrotestosterone (DHT) once it reaches hair follicles. This DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) is the natural metabolite of the human body that is the main reason for hair loss.  Once created, DHT starts to limit the blood flow in the scalp and tighten skin around the follicles, effectively destroying hair. The good thing is that proper nutrition can stop this process before it really begins, or even turn back all the negative changes.

However, you may ask why some men don’t lose their hair even though they surely have high level of testosterone in their blood. The answer is simple: because they have enough DHT blockers in their scalps to prevent it. How can one get enough DHT blockers? It’s simple, too - all you need to do is to introduce them into your bloodstream through topical application and a proper diet.

Weapons Against DHT

First, there comes zinc. While it does not react directly with DHT, it helps prevent hair loss by indirectly countering the DHT effects. Zinc is a great stress reducer, relaxing muscles and effectively preventing DHT from tightening them. People with zinc deficiencies are among the first victims of baldness. It can be found in a variety of products, including whole grains, mushrooms and red meat. However, we should pay a lot of attention to dozing it - a zinc overdose can hamper your iron absorption rate and trigger anemia.

Next, there is Vitamin H, a component of the B complex vitamin group. It helps hair growth and is directly responsible for their strength, as it is responsible for the fatty acid metabolism and fueling the growth speed of hair as well as the rate the damages are being repaired. The only problem is that most natural sources of Vitamin H (or biotin, as it is sometimes called) are also incredibly rich in fat.

Another important nutrient which can help you heal your hair is proteins. They are the hair construction material, thus it is necessary to keep them strong and thick, making them less prone to damages done by DHT. Proteins are probably the most commonly used nutrient to prevent thinning of hair. On the downside, they are not dream solution to all your problems: proteins can’t help you regrow your hair on bald patches.

Vitamin A is known under many different names, but regardless of which we use, one thing remains the same: this amino acid is one of the most important supplements for our hair. Vitamin A acts as an anti-oxidant promoting the secretion of sebum, which in turn binds testosterone before it can reach the follicles and become DHT. We can easily get a lot of Vitamin A through a balanced diet as it can be found in various foods, including yellow vegetables, fish oils and many kinds of meat. Just remember that you mustn’t exceed the standard daily requirement - in large quantities Vitamin A is considered to be somewhat toxic. It can’t generally be done through a diet, but a Vitamin A-rich diet plus taking a lot of artificial supplement may be enough to start some problems.

The next important nutritional element is a well-known anti-aging amino-acid, Vitamin E. It promotes the blood circulation, and makes sure that all hair will be well-nourished. As a side effect, Vitamin E is also responsible for reducing the amount of gray hair - another effect of DHT. Vegetable oils are probably the best source of Vitamin E, as long as they have been cold-processed, so devising the right diet shouldn’t be a problem. On the downside, you can easily overdo it - in large quantities Vitamin E is responsible for increased blood pressure and abusing it may lead to hypertension.

The role of nutrients in the prevention of the balding process is well-known and keeping the right amount of all above mentioned products in your diet should generally be enough to prevent hair loss. The problem is that in most cases it is hardly possible for a normal diet to accommodate for all those nutrients while keeping your blood pressure and weight at a stable level. That’s why most people would do much better if they chose to use a proper nutritional supplement instead of trying to create an ideal diet. And fortunately for them, the solution is right at hand.
