I know that high blood pressure can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and blindness, if left untreated. Her doctor advised her to change her lifestyle. Few days before, one of my client said that she had high blood pressure.
She was quite hesitant to take prescription medications after reading about the potentially life threatening side effects. As her blood pressure wasn’t dangerously high but headed there if changes weren’t made, she asked if she could first change her diet, and start exercising to see if this could lower her blood pressure to safe level.
Not everyone who drinks caffeine coffee is affected, but my client’s blood pressure got higher when she drank coffee. She was asked to reduce her sodium level and told drinking 2-3 cups of caffeinated coffee was the problem.
Second is the caffeine causes adrenal gland to release extra levels of adrenaline, can cause an increase in blood pressure. First, it is that caffeine can block a hormone which helps the arteries wide and open. These are two theories
This was not a problem except for that my client really liked her morning, afternoon an evening coffee. As changing to decaffeinated coffee, she was not able to adapt to it.
The taste was not offending, and was different to coffee; that was quite pleasing to her. When a friend affectionately labeled her “granola girl” friend and recommended hibiscus flower tea.
After a month of drinking the tea, she returned to her doctor and found that her blood pressure readings had actually lowered by 10%! How could this be, she mused.
A research done by the American Heart Association proved that people with high blood pressure who take hibiscus tea three times a day for six weeks (as compared to those drinking a placebo) was able to decrease blood pressure between 7-12%. This is same as who take high blood pressure medication.
While researchers don’t know exactly what part of the hibiscus flower is known to lower blood pressure, it is thought that they contain anthocyanins, chemicals known to improve the functioning of blood vessels, is one very helpful component.
Additionally, the flower contains antioxidants, which help to rid the body of free radicals. Free radicals have been linked to heart disease, cancer and premature aging.
She needs to do some exercise to lower her blood pressure without medication to convince her doctor. For my client changing her diet and adding hibiscus tea wasn’t enough.
