The irreversible dilation of a superficial vein in the body results in the formation of varicose veins. Varicose veins, by themselves may not be harmful, but can be the reason for several health problems. They are sorted depending on their size. The largest varicose veins with a diameter of about .6mm to 4.4mm are the reticular veins whereas the collateral veins are the ones with a diameter of 3 mm.

Varicose veins are most frequently found in the lower limbs of the body like the legs and thigh. However, their occurrence in some of the other places like the vulva or rectum in case of hemorrhoids isn’t uncommon. A varicose vein is never natural. It is formed due to a diseased condition of the venous wall referred to as chronic venous disease.

Varicose VeinsThe swelling of the vein makes it easy to identify the varicose vein. The swelling which is caused by the venous wall’s malfunction forms a sack where the blood collects and the blood circulation stops. Too much pressure on the malfunctioning venous wall can also cause the vein to rupture and lead to internal bleeding.

There are three layers that constitute the venous walls. But varicose veins have walls that endure atrophy or hypertrophy. If the wall experiences atrophy, then it becomes thinner than a normal venous wall and becomes vulnerable to rupture during excessive pressure. If the wall undergoes hypertrophy, then this results in the thickening of the wall. But neither of these are the result of the normal aging process of a vein.

The stagnancy of the blood in the varicose veins contributes to the degradation of the walls. The toxins contained in the stagnated blood can impair the venous wall. The stagnated blood may also form a thrombus and lead to a disease called the superficial venous thrombosis.

The varicose veins attempt to grow in number and size. With the ageing process, the venous blood can increase in the pouches of these varicose veins and the walls of these veins being weak may not be able to bear the increase in blood pressure. This can split and damage the blood vessels and impair the blood flow.
