Pregnancy is itself an ordeal a woman has to face until delivery. But, it is not without other possible ailments that may trouble her. The most likely problem that may occur during pregnancy is vaginal yeast infection as the microorganisms like Candida albicans that are already present in the vagina in small number find a favourable environment to grow. The itching and burning that is associated with this problem is most terrible to bear with. However, a majority of women are not aware of the problem that starts suddenly after pregnancy. They even do not know how to cure a yeast infection when pregnant.

If you want to know how to cure a yeast infection when pregnant, there are so many prevailing treatments for this problem. However, some of the treatments with Drugs like Mycostatin or Diflucan may interfere with the natural development of embryo. Though, such treatment may mitigate the problem in the beginning, it cannot be said with certainty that the infection will not recur. In order to avoid the bad side effects that such drugs have, it is better to go in for home remedies like boric acid suppositories and tea tree oil. Whereas the former work better to cut down the population of candida while relieving burning and itching, the efficacy of the latter is not yet established because the tea tree oil cannot be applied to the affected parts orally in its crude form due to its danger of causing sores inside the vagina. The former should also be not applied frequently as there is a danger of friendly bacteria called Lactobacilli to recede. The natural presence of these bacteria in the vagina is enough to fight out candida. However, the application of tea tree oil in diluted form is said to reduce the fetid smell and redness caused by candida. (more…)

One of the biggest indicators of one’s age is sagging jowls. Sagging facial skin is an unattractive and obvious sign that a person is getting older. The Ayurvedic Approach to Breast Health

The Ayurvedic Approach to Breast Health

Like all tissues and organs in the human body, the female breasts are multidimensional in function. Their most recognized function is as exocrine glands, producing breast milk for the newborn, a function common to all mammalian species. Given the multidimensional functions of the breasts, a discussion of breast health approaches could be complex. Therefore, in this article we will limit our discussion to what women can do from the Ayurvedic perspective to reduce their chances of developing the most dangerous of breast diseases: breast cancer.

First let’s briefly review some simple breast anatomy. Mammary glands are basically highly modified and specialized sebaceous glands which derive from embryonic ectoderm. The adult breast consists of glandular tissue, adipose tissue (fat cells), nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics. Anatomically it overlies the pectoralis major muscle and is anchored to the pectoralis fascia by suspensory ligaments known as Cooper’s ligaments (not shown). The breast contains about 15 to 25 lobes formed by groups of “milk glands”, or lobules. Each lobule is composed of hollow milk producing acini (also called alveoli), and feeds into a milk duct leading to the nipples. The ducts converge near the areola, the darker area round the nipple, to form ampullae or milk storage cavities. Around the areola are small glands known as Montgomery’s glands which secrete an oily substance that protects the nipples during nursing. Lymph nodes within the breast drain into the axillary lymph nodes in the armpit-the first place to which breast cancer will typically metastasize. (more…)

Mothers should remember that you are indeed eating for two and all the responsibility that comes along with that. Whatever you do to your body affects the baby and eating is no exception. Make the right choices now and your baby will have a great chance of avoiding complications like premature births, developmental disabilities and low birth weight.

Here is a list of some foods to be avoided during pregnancy:

Genetically modified foods
These are manufactured “foods” that had their DNA altered for a specific purpose. Some foods have been altered to create their own pesticide or to become weather resistant. Food manufacturers have tried to convince everyone that this engineered food is superior to the good old natural way. However, the American Academy of environmental medicine states “several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility…. changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.” (1) (more…)
