Fertility can be quite a sensitive issue for women and couples who are struggling to conceive. Today, couples that battle with fertility are fortunate to have many medical options available to them. The type of fertility treatment that you choose will largely depend on your individual situation and the recommendations that your doctor makes. Nevertheless, it does no harm to be informed and aware of the different fertility options available.

Use of Fertility Drugs

This is usually the first choice of doctors when considering fertility treatments as this form of treatment is generally the least stressful and can be, depending on what drugs are used, the least expensive of the options. The fertility drugs regulate a woman’s reproductive hormones and trigger the release of one or more eggs during the ovulation cycle. The treatment can be administered in the form of monthly injections or tablets that are taken daily. Most women try fertility drugs as an initial treatment for several months before considering other options. Fertility drugs are often also used in combination with other treatments. Fertility drugs have been recorded as having between a 20 to 60 percent rate of success and this tends to increase when combined with other treatments.

Pregnancy is a beautiful phase of a woman’s life wherein she feels proud of the fact that she is nurturing a life inside her. Many women take this fact quite seriously and start eating for two adults; this results in excessive weight gain. Experts believe that to provide nourishment to the growing foetus, women need just about 300 calories extra during pregnancy. This can easily be sufficed through extra nutritional food. You don’t need to eat for two adults. While little indulgence on chocolates and ice creams can be fine occasionally, excessive calories should be avoided.

Extra weight gain during pregnancy can be risky for both mother and her child. Obese pregnant women are at a risk of developing complications like child birth defects, miscarriage and other life threatening complications like pre-eclampsia. Obesity during pregnancy also increases the risk of maternal high blood pressure by 10 times. Women who are obese during pregnancy are more likely to have gestational diabetes and problems with labour and delivery. They are also at higher risk of Cesarean deliveries.

If you are lucky enough to have already conceived - and as a smoker you started with around 50% less chance of conception than a non smoker - then congratulations. However, if you would like to quit smoking during pregnancy and still consider the idea as difficult, if not impossible, then your stress added to your smoking habit can cause immense harm to yourself and your newborn. Worst of all, that combination could affect whether your baby is born full term, prematurely or at all, because smoking is said to be a factor in miscarriage and stress causes many organs of the body to function less effectively. The British Medical Association states that smoking is responsible for up to 5,000 miscarriages a year in the UK alone.

How is the damage caused

Smoking deposits nicotine and many other toxic chemicals into the bloodstream, which means that the fetus is unable to receive the right amount of oxygen, and in turn this also increases the chance of losing a pregnancy.
