Anxiety and depression are common disorders that many people suffer from. Doctors and scientists will agree that good nutrition and the right combination of vitamins and supplements can reduce or even alleviate the need for prescription based medications. There are several different supplements that may help bring anxiety under control. All of these supplements can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. Consulting a health professional before taking any new supplements is always recommended, especially if they are going to be added with prescription medication.

Passion Flower (Passiflora Incarnata)

Passion Flower is an herbal supplement. The leaves, petals, and stems of the plant are used in making teas or tinctures. When in tea form it may be mixed with other calming herbs to increase its effectiveness. Tinctures can be added to juice or other drinks and taken as needed. Passion flower is primarily used as a calming agent to help with anxiety or insomnia. Doctors agree that is does work as well as some prescription drugs for aiding in anxiety disorders, however, there are few studies on how it actually works. It is theorized that it increases the production of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA is an amino acid that helps calm and reduce hyper-activity which is why passion flower has become such a popular supplement for treating children. (more…)

Dec 31, 2011 Author: miss | Filed under: Health, Mental Health

Feeling down in the dumps now that the holidays are over? If you’re hoping for something uplifting on these dreary days and cold nights, you’re not alone. T.S. Eliot, in The Waste Land, said, “April is the cruelest month.” But studies have found that for the majority of Americans, January is the most depressing month of the year.

Have you experienced any of this yourself? Your eager anticipation for the holidays is over, replaced by the reality of a celebration that didn’t live up to your expectations. Your clothes are tight from the weight you gained from the parties and winter sweet cravings. Your loved ones are gone and you’re feeling lonely. By the end of the first week of January, one-third to one-half of you have already caved in on your New Year’s resolutions, leaving you feeling disappointed and frustrated. The credit card bills have arrived and you realize you spent more than you planned. And, with all the holiday lights, you may not have noticed the short days and long nights in December - but now it’s painfully obvious that winter is clearly here. (more…)

In my experience, whether by talking to the thousands of people that I’ve talked to, or by reading all the many thousands of emails people have sent me, I’ve noted several mistakes that supporters make in coping with a loved one who has bipolar disorder. In this article, I’ll just go over the top ten.

1. Being in denial.

Being in denial is the biggest mistake that supporters make because it will cause you to miss the signs/symptoms of your loved one going into a bipolar episode. It’s so important, first of all, that you know all the signs/symptoms of an episode, so that you can recognize when your loved one is heading for one. That takes education on your part. That’s the easy part. But recognizing them may be a little harder, and takes more work on your part, because sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between which is the disorder and which is your loved one. However, if you’re in denial, it won’t help either way. (more…)

It is possible to find some time for yoga poses at work, even in the brief moments while waiting for applications to load, or the copier to finish some copies for you. You could also take the time over lunch for some relaxing yoga postures, to relieve stress and enhance focus.

Even simple breathing can become yoga. Try breathing like this:

When inhaling, expand the upper ribcage and abdomen. Keep the lower abdomen compressed a little towards the spine. When exhaling, relax the ribcage and abdomen to let the air flow out. Activate the abdominal muscles to expel as much air as possible. If you like, hum while exhaling - this is the “Brahmari”, or Bee Breath, cleansing and clearing the respiratory system.
