Keep Your Ears Healthy and Your Hearing Sharp

Jan 19, 2010 Author: Ashley King | Filed under: Ear Problems, Health

There are a number of different causes of hearing loss. It might be damage to the cochlea, which occurs when tiny hairs inside of the cochlea bend or break, which causes the nerve cells in the ear to degenerate. This means that electrical signals are not transmitted to the ear as quickly or efficiently as possible, which could result in severe hearing loss over time. Or the problem could be due to recurrent ear infections or wax buildup, or it might be hereditary in nature.

Having a hearing assessment done by a professional audiologist will help you to determine the steps that you need to take to maintain and improve your hearing health. Your level of hearing is measured in decibels as well as frequency. Humans should be able to hear between the frequencies of 500 and 4000Hz, so if your hearing is normal, your hearing assessment will probably indicate that you can hear from 0 to 20 dB HL. If you are experiencing mild hearing loss, the reading will be in the 20-40 range; moderate hearing loss reads from 40-60, and severe hearing loss is 60-80. If your assessment reads 80 dB HL or more, your audiologist will give you information on the best devices for profound hearing loss.

Drugs That Cause Tinnitus: What Can Be Done About Them?

Jul 10, 2009 Author: Thomas Colman | Filed under: Ear Problems, Health
There are many probable factors that can cause tinnitus. The most notable ones among them are constantly hearing loud sounds, obstructions caused by ear wax, and senility brought about by old age. In addition to them, certain medicines can also be held responsible for tinnitus, as a result of which the affected person has to bear the noises, day after day. In 1944, when Streptomycin hit the markets, and was widely prescribed to tackle tuberculosis, this was confirmed. Not only did Streptomycin have the customary side effects usually found with antibiotics, but it also caused tribulations in the vestibule as well as the internal parts of the ear (Cochlear). This meant that, those who were treated with this drug, experienced vertigo and problems in hearing as well.

Later on, antibiotics belonging to amino glycoside also started to display similar side effects as Streptomycin. These effects were collectively termed ototoxicity. Many other types of medications, including chemotherapy (platinum-based), loop diuretics and quinine were also found to cause the same effects. The age-old salicylates that are commonly used to treat fever symptoms are not an exception also. In fact, the toxicity of all these medications is so much that, they affect the cochleo-vestibulat system adversely. In other words, these medicines hold out harmful (toxic) effects to both the inner ear (Cochlea) as well as his/her vestibular (balance) system of the ear. As a result, the affected person can experience difficulty in hearing, and might also develop vertigo lose his or her state of equilibrium, and start having tinnitus problems. Other related health issues are also not uncommon.
