Potential Foot Problems With Diabetes

Oct 9, 2010 Author: Toby Dushieney | Filed under: Diabetes, Foot Health, Health

Like type 2 diabetes, neuropathy, or nerve disease, can come unnoticed as the symptoms are gradual.

The end result of neuropathy, if not treated, is amputation of the feet. This is a major incentive to monitor and keep proper control of one’s blood glucose levels, as it is those who have poor control who are most at risk.

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetics are equally at risk of neuropathy, which usually appears after 10 years of high and uncontrolled blood sugar.

Drinking does not help, and combined with poor glucose control, can contribute to this disease. Those with longer nerves, ie tall people are generally at more risk of contracting this disease.

Diabetes can be a devastating disease, especially when it comes to one’s feet. Wounds, infections, and eventual amputations are all part the common complications facing diabetic feet, even more so during the summer months when everyone is more active. However, these complications can be prevented with enough self diligence and the adoption of several simple daily habits. This article presents four helpful tips that can make the difference this summer between healthy feet and a leg amputation.

1. Wear Supportive Shoes

The summer months see everyone become more active outside, especially in colder climates. Unfortunately, many people choose to wear shoes that feel ‘cooler’, but are poorly supportive. These types of shoes include flip-flop sandals, flats, and slip-on clog type shoes. These shoes may be easy to put on, and may ‘feel’ cooler. What one trades for though is support and function. These types of shoes offer little to no structural support for the foot. Areas of natural pressure will build up in a diabetic, and pose a risk for calluses and eventual wounds. Blisters from friction can also develop, leading to skin wounds and infections. A better choice for active summer shoe wear is a breathable, well fitting athletic shoe that offers support, comfort, and better structural stability.

Is honey good for diabetes patients? The straight answer is yes; honey is natural; brewed and cooked by bees; its heavy component is fructose and glucose making up over 80% and 18% water. Vitamins are plenty too; these are B6, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid as well as certain amino acids. The better part of honey is that compared to sugar, honey has invert sugar ready for uptake with ease; while commercial sugar has to be inverted, thus taxing the alimentary canal to a big extend.

Have a look at the chemistry and physiological performance of each, it’s amazing; honey is sweeter than sugar; it has more calories; one teaspoonful has about 65 while sugar has 45. Raw honey is rich as indicated above, with 180 different compounds that are of value to man; while sugar most of its contents remain sucrose nothing else. Antioxidants or antirust are found in honey which chemically remove free radicals in our bodies; at the moment, more research is on to determine what additional medical benefits are in store on this line. In short, honey is of medicinal value; it doesn’t decompose; all forms of colds, flu etc can be handled well by honey plus diabetes and many more, which are yet to be researched. (more…)

Diabetes is related with a disorder of metabolism the way your bodies use digested food for development and energy. Especially in the United States it is the most leading causes of death and disability. This problem is also related with long term complications by which almost every part of the body gets affected. Diabetes is a chronic and gradually progressive ailment which has an impact upon almost every part of life. When our body can’t use glucose properly then it results into the condition of diabetes.

A hormone which is essential to convert starches, sugar and other food into energy is insulin. The insulin only permits glucose to move from the blood into liver, muscle, and fat cells, where it is used for fuel. In the condition of diabetes, our immune system molests and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Especially in type 2 diabetes pancreas produces frequently and enough insulin but due to some unidentified reasons the insulin is not used by our body in an effective way. This type of diabetes is called insulin resistance.
