It’s called restless leg syndrome. I call it the heeby geebies. My Grandmother calls it the St. Vitas dance. Whatever name you call it by, it’s one of the most annoying, unpleasant conditions I know of. It’s proper name is restless leg syndrome or RLS for short. It is characterized by sensations described as burning, creepy crawly, pins and needles or tugging deep in the legs. The only way to appease it is by moving your legs.

RLS is a disorder of the part of the nervous system that affects movement of the bodies appendages. Even though this condition usually affects the legs it can also occur in the feet, thighs, hands and arms. It can begin at any age, but is more common in older people as they pass middle age.

Do You Know About EMS And Why You Should Use It?

May 17, 2010 Author: Adriana Noton | Filed under: Bones, Joints and Muscles, Health

Electronic muscle stimulation is commonly referred to as EMS. And devices used to create this muscle stimulation are known as electronic muscle stimulators. So, the abbreviation is used in common for both. The process of using electricity to change the way muscles work is often used by physical therapists after an injury or a sports surgery. These therapists are trained to use this process to alleviate pain and stiffness in their patients. Often, the process enhances the ability of the patient to heal more quickly without excess pain.

The use of EMS devices in the U. S. A. Is regulated by the FDA. So you may not encounter treatment of this kind unless you have been sent for physical therapy by your doctor. Basically small electric shocks are sent to the affected area via electrical cords attached to small pads on your body. Certain therapists are trained in the correct placement of the pads, and the right levels of electricity to use for each case. Injured muscles can be helped to move better this way.

Joint pain is so excruciating that people who have experienced it even just once cringe at the thought of its recurrence. There are many ways to relieve joint pains. However, each joint pain relief is dependent on what causes the pain. Could it be brought about by arthritis, injury, or gout?

Whichever the cause is, one of the most common treatments to is drug treatment. However, you must bear in mind that if you are experiencing pains due osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, no drugs can actually cure you for good. The drugs only help to reduce the joint pain and improve your mobility. It restricts your functional impairment and it enables you to go on with your routine as normally as possible. But, this does not mean your arthritis is gone forever.

Sciatic Exercise sounded like an oxymoron to me at first. But in reality, while bed rest is good for you at the beginning of a sciatica flare up, it will probably worsen your condition if going on too long (more than a day or two). You need to get back to your normal rhythm of life as soon as you can (of course avoiding the strenuous things you did that got you into this mess in the first place). Once your worst pain has simmered down you should seriously consider different types of sciatic exercises, depending on what caused your sciatica pain. What helps for one condition may worsen another. That’s why you should always see a physician before starting exercises to find out when you can start exercising, which exercises to do and how often.

Having said that, I’d like to focus on a particular type of sciatic exercises, which will probably be one of the most beneficial types of treatments for your sciatica pain: warm water exercises. Even though at the beginning of a sciatica flare up it is better to treat with cold rather than heat, once the healing process is underway warm water is very beneficial in a number of ways.

We perform a myriad of tasks due to the wide range of motion that our shoulders allow us. Lifting objects, scratching our back or even throwing a spin ball are some of the tasks that we can accomplish due to the mobility of our shoulders. Nevertheless, this mobility also causes the shoulder to become vulnerable to a host of injuries. Muscle cramps can be unexpected, uncontrolled and tremendously painful, this kind of pain is most commonly experienced in the legs, and hence often is referred to as a “Charley Horse”.

The exact cause of a leg cramp is not completely understood, but there are some aspects that are thought to contribute to this condition: muscle fatigue, heavy exercising, dehydration, high weight (not necessarily obesity), Eeectrolyte imbalances, medications (statins, prednisone, others…)

The most common reason that is typically seen in patients who acquire leg cramps is exercising in an unusual way, meaning either more activity or a different exercise. Leg cramps are more common in young (adolescent age) and older (over 65) patients. Patients who weigh more are more prone to developing leg cramps. Also, a few medicinal drugs can cause side effects of leg cramping.

What Is a Stress Fracture of the Bone?

Apr 27, 2010 Author: Jonathan Blood Smyth | Filed under: Bones, Joints and Muscles, Health

Stress fractures are a common injury often seen in military personnel and in athletes or anyone who is subjecting their feet or lower body to overuse. It most commonly occurs in the legs but can occur in other parts of the body. Typical areas for this type of fracture are the leg bones of the metatarsals, the fibula and tibia, with areas higher up the legs much less commonly affected. Stress fractures are caused by repeated stresses to the bone which are not enough to fracture initially, leading to mechanical fatigue of the bone and eventually a fracture.

During activity and exercise there may be an increased report of pain in the part, with patients typically noting they have recently made changes to their training regime’s frequency or intensity. Treatment is typically without complication by reducing the person’s activity or by immobilisation of the part. These fractures heal well in most cases although non-union is a possibility, in which case surgical fixation may be required. Once the fracture is surgically fixed the vast majority of cases heal well with suitable immobilisation.
