Nail psoriasis is a common condition for those with skin psoriasis, affecting from 10 to 50% of all patients. It can occur on both fingers and toes - but since toes can be hidden in socks and shoes for a large proportion of the day, fingernails are the real worry for many.

So what are the characteristics of nail psoriasis? The most noticeable textural difference is referred to as pitting. These are tiny, punched-in depressions (basically little craters on the skin). They look as though the nail has ’sunk in’ around those areas and are caused by psoriasis affecting the nail matrix, and changing the plate growth as a result.

Another common feature of nail psoriasis is when the nail grows thicker and crumbles at the ends. This is caused by the matrix splitting away from the nail plate, and is known as onycholysis. As the ends are whitish, the appearance of this can be particularly unpleasant, as it looks similar to nail fungus. (more…)

Windburn which, truth be told, is a misnomer. Yes, it looks like a burn. And it certainly feels like a burn. But it is really a drying effect. Windburn results from a combination of cold wind and low humidity, which depletes the oil layer on your skin. As you might have guessed, folks who live in warm southern climates are virtually immune to windburn, unless they take a trip north in the dead of winter. The condition is most likely to affect those who spend time outside in cold, dry, windy weather. And keep in mind that any exposed, unprotected part of your body is vulnerable, not just your face. A windburn can hurt just as much as a sunburn, but fortunately it is far less serious. It will usually fade away on its own in a couple of days, provided you take proper care of the affected skin. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to speed the healing process.

1. Bundle Up

When you head outdoors in wintry weather, every exposed part of your body needs to be covered. Wear gloves to protect your hands and a stocking cap or hood to protect your ears. Better yet, cover your entire head with a ski mask. (more…)

As a doctor who treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and as the mother of a son with ADHD, one of my research and personal interests is holistic treatment for ADHD. Many ADHD sufferers and parents of children with ADHD are increasingly investigating natural remedies that are effective and do not have the side effects that are associated with commonly prescribed ADHD medications such as Ritalin and its derivatives. These medications are often made from amphetamine salts, and common side effects of these stimulants can include decreased appetite, headaches, upset stomach, the jitters, insomnia, among others.

As a result, many patients are increasingly looking into the supplements and medications listed below which are more mild and do not result in addiction or withdrawal.

Anxiety and depression are common disorders that many people suffer from. Doctors and scientists will agree that good nutrition and the right combination of vitamins and supplements can reduce or even alleviate the need for prescription based medications. There are several different supplements that may help bring anxiety under control. All of these supplements can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. Consulting a health professional before taking any new supplements is always recommended, especially if they are going to be added with prescription medication.

Passion Flower (Passiflora Incarnata)

Passion Flower is an herbal supplement. The leaves, petals, and stems of the plant are used in making teas or tinctures. When in tea form it may be mixed with other calming herbs to increase its effectiveness. Tinctures can be added to juice or other drinks and taken as needed. Passion flower is primarily used as a calming agent to help with anxiety or insomnia. Doctors agree that is does work as well as some prescription drugs for aiding in anxiety disorders, however, there are few studies on how it actually works. It is theorized that it increases the production of GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA is an amino acid that helps calm and reduce hyper-activity which is why passion flower has become such a popular supplement for treating children. (more…)

The Best Exercises To Use In Your Pec Workout

Jan 11, 2012 Author: Susan Jacobs | Filed under: Alternative Medicine, Health

The pectoralis major is the largest muscle group in the upper body. The chest muscles are large slabs spread across the upper torso, so the best pec workout is achieved by using heavy weights in a number of exercises that focus on the upper, lower, inner and outer pecs.

Each muscle group in the body is designed with a different purpose in mind, and the pecs are muscles that push, and work with your arms and shoulders. You’ll notice that many chest exercises therefore also hit your deltoids and your triceps. The kind of results you see will vary with the kind of pec workout that you put together.
