Treating a Lymphoedema Arm

One of the side effects that a woman who has undergone breast cancer surgery may experience is a lymphoedema arm. The arm on the side of the body which has had the surgery may swell or feel heavy or there may be tightness in the wrist. The condition itself may not be life-threatening, nevertheless, the condition remains for life. Lymphedema may be defined as a swelling caused due to the pooling of lymphatic fluids as a result of trauma or injury to the lymphatic system.

An obstruction to the lymphatic flow by the removal of the lymph nodes or the vessels causes a swelling, usually in case of breast cancer surgery. There is a change in the path of fluid movement to the blood stream due to the blockage. In such cases, symptoms like the swelling of the hand or tightness of the wrist may be seen. Symptoms of lymphoedema arm condition may be seen in the whole arm or may be restricted to a small area on the side of the body that had the surgery. However, not every cancer patient experiences the condition. But, it is possible to take certain measures to prevent the incidence of the disease. (more…)
