Feeling stressed, restless or otherwise need a mood boost? Aromatherapy is your answer to soothe and heal the body and mind while softening the skin and has been used for centuries mainly because smells are believed to influence the way we feel.

Aromatherapy is the time tested practice of using essential oils that are distilled or cold pressed from plants and flowers to create and change a mood or mental state. In order to promote health and well being, I usually purchase these essential oils from aromatherapy shops or health food stores. Whole Foods is one of my favorite stores for this.

AromatherapyBecause pure essential oils are strong and can be burn or otherwise irritate the skin, it is important to mix it with a “carrier” oil such as almond, grapeseed and sunflowers oils which are some of the best since they do not affect the scent of the essential oil.

If you use olive oil as a carrier oil, it will interfere with the scent of the essential oils. These oils are also highly potent and one drop can make about 25 to 30 cups of herbal tea.

Aromatherapy is believed to provide soothing relief for a variety of ailments such as stress, menopause, headaches, bronchitis, tension, colds and many other mental and physical ailments.

Essential oils have several functions to address common ailments and many overlap each other in their functions. Here are some basic aromatherapy essential oils that you can mix to begin with;

Tea Tree Oil - I use tea tree oil in everything. I use it in my at home skincare beauty regimens for acne and inflammation. Because it has antiseptic properties, it is great for ear infections, eczema, sore throat, allergy rashes, bad breath, diaper rash, and so forth.

Lavender - This is also one of my favorites and smells simply divine. It is not only soothing and relaxing but can be used for burn and help the skin heal skin disorders. It is also used to prevent scarring as well as relieve arthritis and so forth.

Chamomile - This is a calming and soothing essential oil. It is also great for cramps, inflammation, allergies, burns and bruises, toothaches, etc.

Eucalyptus - This is widely used in inhalants because it helps to clear the sinuses. It is strong and invigorating and can also be used for disinfecting the air, skin irritations, fever reductions, etc.

Bergamot - This is stimulating and energizing and is excellent at relieving anxiety and depression. If you suffer from anxiety attacks or panic attacks, this essential oil will be great to calm you. It is also great to dress wounds and as a deodorant and breath refresher. It can also be used to enhance the aroma of other oils.

Rosemary - This oil is invigorating and uplifting and is excellent at relieving stress.

There many other oils to use in aromatherapy and are essential for your well being.
