It’s called restless leg syndrome. I call it the heeby geebies. My Grandmother calls it the St. Vitas dance. Whatever name you call it by, it’s one of the most annoying, unpleasant conditions I know of. It’s proper name is restless leg syndrome or RLS for short. It is characterized by sensations described as burning, creepy crawly, pins and needles or tugging deep in the legs. The only way to appease it is by moving your legs.

RLS is a disorder of the part of the nervous system that affects movement of the bodies appendages. Even though this condition usually affects the legs it can also occur in the feet, thighs, hands and arms. It can begin at any age, but is more common in older people as they pass middle age.

Restless Leg SyndromeSome contributing factors associated with this condition are anemia, obesity, kidney disease, nerve disease, varicose veins, thyroid problems, heavy metal toxicity, Parkinson’s disease, circulatory problems, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and many other conditions.

RLS symptoms usually start in the evening and especially when you go to bed and are trying to fall asleep. The body might be exhausted, but the legs want to dance. This condition usually leads to insomnia. In fact it is considered to be one of the top four major sleep disorders.

There are some things that make RLS worse that you should avoid. Alcohol, caffeine such as in coffee, chocolate, tea and some sodas, and tobacco. Some medicines to avoid are anti-psychotics, anti-nausea medicines, anti-depressants and antihistamines.

It is thought that there is no one cure for this condition and doctors will treat it on an individual basis depending on what they think is causing it in the first place.

Some natural substances to try are iron tablets if it is thought to be from anemia. Also garlic, folic acid, coenzyme Q10 and ginko biloba could help. Calcium and magnesium can also help this condition and should be taken together to make them more absorbable. Magnesium helps to maintain normal nerve function and has muscle relaxing properties. Always consult your doctor if you are taking prescription medication before taking any supplements.

Restless leg syndrome can also be helped through exercise, especially walking, biking, swimming and stretching. A regular exercise program also helps to let you sleep better. Another remedy to try is warming the legs up with a heating pad in the evening before you go to bed and then massaging each leg. This helps to relax the nerves and muscles.

People are tired of being medicated to death. To death? Yes this happens quite often when they start having numerous conditions as they get older and the list of prescriptions start adding up. If you are dealing with restless leg syndrome why not try some home remedies to get rid of it. For more home remedies that you can try go here: http://restlesslegsyndrome-homeremedies.info
